Picture & fixed

Fixed glazing, because the best-performing window is often the one that does not open.

A fixed window has no sash, no hardware and no seal that has to survive being opened and closed a few thousand times. That is why it delivers the largest glass area, the narrowest frame and the lowest air leakage of anything in the range.

Why fixed

Every operable window is a compromise you may not need.

Operation costs you frame width, hardware and a moving seal. Where a room already has enough ventilation from other openings, spending that budget on a fixed unit instead buys you more glass and a cleaner elevation for the same money.

Fixed units are also how you get genuinely large spans. Our large-format frames carry oversized glass with narrow sightlines, and the cornerless corner window takes that further: two elevations of glass meeting at the corner with no post between them, so the wall appears to simply stop.

The usual pattern in a well-planned room is a large fixed unit doing the visual work with a smaller tilt and turn or casement beside it doing the ventilating.

Common questions

Questions homeowners and builders ask us

Can a fixed window be made any size?

Not any size. The limit is glass weight and wind load for the elevation, not the frame. Past a certain span the glass make-up has to get heavier, which changes both the cost and what it takes to set the unit. Send us the opening dimensions and the elevation and we will tell you what is buildable.

Do fixed windows still need to meet energy code?

Yes. Fixed units are included in the fenestration calculation for the building, and because they are usually the biggest pieces of glass in the house, their solar heat gain coefficient has an outsized effect on the result.

How do you clean the outside of a large fixed window?

From outside, since there is no inward-opening sash. On upper stories that is worth planning for before you specify a large fixed unit somewhere a ladder cannot reach.

Ready to price your windows?
