Casement windows that crank out, seal hard and stay out of the room.
A casement is hinged at the side and cranks outward. Because the sash presses into its seals as it closes rather than sliding past them, a well-built casement is one of the most airtight windows you can specify, and it leaves the interior completely clear.
The right window over a sink, a counter or a walkway.
Because the sash swings out, nothing intrudes into the room. That makes casements the standard answer above kitchen counters, behind fixed furniture, and anywhere an inward swinging sash would collide with something. The crank means you can reach and operate a window that is physically out of arm’s reach.
The outswing sash also works as a scoop: opened toward the prevailing breeze it catches air and directs it into the room, which helps on the shoulder-season evenings when Austin is actually pleasant enough to open the house up.
The trade-off is the swing path outside. Over a walkway, a narrow side yard or a patio where people move past the elevation, an open casement is something to plan around, or a reason to choose tilt and turn instead.

Questions homeowners and builders ask us
Casement or tilt and turn: which should I choose?
If the inside of the window needs to stay clear, choose the casement, because it swings out. If the outside needs to stay clear, or you want to leave ventilation running while the house is empty, choose tilt and turn. Both seal by compression, so on airtightness there is little between them.
Are casement windows good in a hot climate?
The operation is not what governs that. The glazing is. In Austin the number to focus on is the solar heat gain coefficient, which is set by the low-e coating and glass package, not by whether the sash cranks or tilts. See the Texas energy efficiency guide.
How much maintenance does the crank hardware need?
Very little, but it is a mechanism and it does have a service life. Keep the hinge track clear of grit and the operator will generally outlast the finish on the frame.
